How difficult is it to get into Harvard's engineering program?

Does anyone have any insight into the acceptance rates for Harvard's engineering program? I know it's probably super competitive, just like their general admissions, but I'm hoping someone might have some specifics or any tips on increasing my chances. Thanks!

Harvard's John A. Paulson School of Engineering and Applied Sciences (SEAS) indeed is known for its competitiveness, just like Harvard's overall admissions. However, no separate admission rates are published specifically for the SEAS; rather, all applicants to Harvard College are admitted to the college first, and then they declare their concentration (major) typically at the end of sophomore year.

In terms of tips to improve your chances, admissions will look closely at your coursework in high school, particularly in math and science. They want to see that you've challenged yourself with high-level classes in these areas. Good grades in such classes are certainly valuable, supported with strong SAT/ACT math scores.

Moreover, they will appreciate extracurricular activities showcasing your interest in engineering. These may include science competitions or fairs, research, projects, internships, or work at a local engineering firm. Involvement in engineering-related clubs, or better yet, leadership in these clubs, can demonstrate commitment too.

Additionally, your essays should indicate a clear and genuine enthusiasm for engineering, and possibly for how you plan to use your engineering knowledge in the future.

Finally, strong recommendation letters, particularly from your math and science teachers, detailing your aptitude for engineering can be exceptionally helpful.

Remember, Harvard accepts students to the college as a whole, and not to specific majors, so these tips should be considered as a way to build a strong overall application, with a slant toward engineering. It's not just about having the credentials to be an engineering student but about being a well-rounded individual who can contribute to the Harvard community in multiple ways. Being genuinely interested in learning and contributing in your chosen field typically becomes evident in your application and this can really make a difference.
