What should I know about the National Honor Society application?

I'm considering applying to the National Honor Society this year but am not quite sure what's involved in the application process. What are the typical requirements that applicants need to fulfill, and what does the selection committee usually look for in a candidate? Are there any tips or examples that could help me strengthen my application? I really want to make sure I put my best foot forward.

The National Honor Society (NHS) has a comprehensive application process that can vary by chapter but, at a minimum, involves four major criteria: scholarship, leadership, service, and character.

The first requirement, scholarship, is usually demonstrated by maintaining a certain GPA, often a minimum of 3.0 or 85 out of 100 on a 4.0 scale, but this threshold may be higher in some chapters.

As for leadership, NHS values candidates who hold roles in school or community activities and have an excellent record of contributing to the team or group efforts. Look at opportunities where you stepped up, took on responsibility, or drove a project or event.

Service is an another important criterion. Such activities tend to be volunteer-based, done without compensation, and with a positive, courteous, and enthusiastic spirit. The NHS typically requires a specific number of community service hours, which can vary based on your local chapter.

Character is likely the most subjective criterion. This assesses peer and teacher perception of the student's character, assessing qualities like respect, responsibility, honesty, and fairness. Recommendations or character references often play a part in this aspect of the evaluation.

After meeting the minimum requirements, students are invited to apply. You might have to write an essay detailing your character and leadership experience. This essay should focus on specific examples where you exhibited leadership and moral character.

The selection process also varies. Usually, a faculty council reviews applications and voting takes place. The council might consider any verified incidences of cheating or student misconduct, so it's crucial to maintain an upstanding character at all times.

My advice: be as proactive and involved as you can be – both in school and in your community. Don't just aim for the minimum; strive to exceed the GPA requirement, maintain an excellent disciplinary record, and seek out leadership roles in activities that interest you. Diversify your community service efforts and always put your best foot forward – in and out of the classroom. And of course, once you receive an application, make sure to complete it thoroughly, honestly, and on time!
