What's the student population like at UPenn for undergrads?

I'm trying to get a sense of the undergraduate experience at the University of Pennsylvania, and part of that is understanding how big the student body is. How many undergraduates are there at UPenn right now? Also, does the size of the undergrad population affect the community vibe on campus? I'm thinking about applying there and want to make sure it's a good fit for me in terms of size. Thanks!

As of Fall 2024, the University of Pennsylvania (commonly known as UPenn) is home to around 11,850 undergraduate students. This makes UPenn one of the larger Ivy League schools, but in terms of overall university size, it's considered medium compared to other institutions nationwide.

The size of the undergraduate population can certainly influence the campus community and the opportunities available to students. At UPenn, opportunities for intimate classroom experiences and one-on-one interactions with professors aren't sacrificed despite the relatively larger student body. The student-faculty ratio at UPenn is approximately 6:1, and nearly 70% of the classes have fewer than 20 students. This means that while you have access to a diverse and dynamic student body, you also have the opportunity for close-knit learning experiences.

Students at UPenn often describe the university as having a unique balance of a vibrant city environment coupled with a sense of community on campus. Even though the student population is quite large, the school fosters a tight-knit community feel with housing options that promote communal living, active student organizations, and traditions like Spring Fling. Furthermore, being at a larger university can actually provide more opportunities for you to meet a diverse group of peers and find communities that align with your interests.

However, as you consider the size of the undergraduate community, also take into account what you need from a college experience. There's no one-size-fits-all answer - some students thrive in more intimate, small environments, while others prefer larger, more bustling campuses. Additional facets of UPenn, like its urban setting, rigorous academics, and its focus on pre-professionalism should also guide your decision.
