Wondering about college life in Portland

As I start to narrow down my college list, Portland came up as a potential candidate. What is the college scene like in Portland? I'm interested in sustainable design and environmental sciences, so a college with those strengths would be ideal. How is the student life and city atmosphere overall? Additionally, are there any specific colleges or universities that you would recommend in Portland that offer strong environmental programs?

Portland is a fantastic city for college students, particularly those interested in sustainable design and environmental sciences. The city is known for its commitment to sustainability, its dynamic food scene, and the natural beauty that surrounds it. There's always something to do, whether it's attending a live music performance, visiting the local farmers market, hiking the nearby Mt. Hood, or simply enjoying one of the city's many coffee shops.

The city is also home to several colleges and universities. Portland State University, for example, offers a robust program in Environmental Science and Management, and its campus is integrated directly with the city. It's right off the Portland Streetcar line which provides students with easy access to all parts of the city.

Lewis and Clark College is another good fit, given its emphasis on environmental studies, sustainability, and global issues. The school is located in a picturesque setting with plenty of opportunities for outdoor activities and experiential learning in the field. Their Environmental Studies program is interdisciplinary and incorporates the natural sciences, social sciences, and humanities.

University of Portland also has strong programs in environmental science and even an Environmental Ethics and Policy program if your interests lean more toward the policy side of things. It's a smaller, private school with a strong community feel and beautiful views over the Willamette River.

In overall terms, the social life in Portland can be quite vibrant. Most local establishments maintain a friendly, inclusive atmosphere, and there are plenty of festivals and events happening throughout the year that cater to a variety of interests. From the famed Powell’s City of Books to the picturesque Japanese Garden, Portland provides a plethora of leisure activities for everyone.

That being said, keep in mind that every student's college experience is unique, and what works for one person may not work for another. Be sure to explore each college's course offerings, campus culture, and financial aid opportunities to ensure it's the right fit for you. Good luck with your search and decision!
