When should I take SATs as a high school junior?

I'm currently a high school junior and trying to plan out my schedule for the rest of the year in terms of standardized testing. I've heard people mention different times to take the SAT, but I'm not sure which option is best. Should I take the SAT in the spring of my junior year or wait until the fall of my senior year? I want to make sure I have enough time to retake it if necessary, but I also don't want to be stressed out during my school finals. Any advice on when you guys took your SATs and how it worked out for you?

A popular time for high school juniors to take the SAT is in the spring, around March or May. This timing can be beneficial as it may align with the school year's curriculum, allowing you to utilize what you're currently learning and have learned thus far in your junior year. The spring of junior year typically gives a lot of students a good balance between having enough content knowledge to succeed on the SAT, and also leaving enough time to retake the test if necessary.

For example, if you take the SAT in the spring and don't feel great about your score, you could retake it in the summer without the stress of balancing your schoolwork, or in early fall. This gives you at least one additional opportunity to achieve a satisfactory score before the regular deadline for admissions comes around.

Taking the SAT in the fall of senior year is also an option. However, keep in mind that this could coincide with other college application tasks. This might put extra pressure on you and potentially impinge on your ability to devote time to other parts of your application, such as essays, which would be due around the same time for early action and early decision applications.

Remember that everyone's circumstances are different. Consider your academic workload, extracurricular commitments, and personal preference when deciding on the optimum SAT schedule for you.
