What Are Some Good Schools for Studying Biology?

I'm really interested in studying biology, and I'm starting to put together my college list. I know I want a program that not only has great academics but also offers hands-on research opportunities.

I'm considering both in-state options and schools that might require a move. Does anyone have recommendations for universities known for their strong biology departments? Also, how do you find out about research opportunities and facilities available to undergraduates? Thanks in advance for your insights!

There are many excellent schools across the U.S. known for their exceptional Biology departments and research facilities. Here are a few:

1. Harvard University: Known for having one of the best undergraduate biology programs. It offers strong foundational coursework, as well as numerous subfields for specialization. The university also boasts of cutting-edge research facilities.

2. Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT): Particularly strong in biological engineering and biomedical research. The Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program (UROP) at MIT may be of interest.

3. University of California - Los Angeles (UCLA): Notable for their robust biological research facilities and faculty who are leaders in their respective fields.

4. University of California - Berkeley (Cal): Offers a unique emphasis on ecological and environmental biology research.

5. Stanford University: Renowned for life sciences and engineering fusion, particularly in the area of biomedical research.

Bear in mind, the "best" program for you will largely depend on your specific interests within biology.

As for researching available opportunities and facilities, I recommend checking out each university's biology department webpage. They typically have sections dedicated to undergraduate research opportunities and can provide details about labs, research projects, and faculty interests. The universe of biology is vast, so focus on schools that have strengths in your areas of interest. Make note of the faculty who are doing research in your interested topics, and don’t hesitate to reach out and ask them about opportunities for undergraduate students to assist with research. Looking into whether a school has a dedicated program for fostering undergraduate research (like MIT's UROP) could also prove valuable. Good luck with your search!
