Hey everyone, I’ve been really interested in attending an HBCU for the unique cultural and educational experience they offer. I'm from Illinois, and I'm trying to stay somewhat close to home. Does anyone know if there are any HBCU colleges in the state, and could you share any information about their programs, reputations, or what student life is like there?
While the majority of HBCUs are located in the southern and eastern parts of the United States, you might be interested to know that there's an HBCU reasonably near to you called Harris-Stowe State University, which is in St. Louis, Missouri. It's not in Illinois, but it's close enough that you might consider it within your geographic range.
Harris-Stowe has a strong reputation, particularly in education, as it started as a teachers' college. Its programs in business and other professional studies are also gaining recognition. As for student life, it offers a close-knit community with a wealth of clubs, organizations, and Greek life dedicated to celebrating and fostering cultural enrichment and leadership. You'd have a lot of opportunities to engage in activities that celebrate African American heritage and culture. I'd recommend visiting the campus if possible, as that could give you the best feel for what your experience there may be like. Hope this helps in your college search!
