Is Occidental University in California a good fit for students?

I'm looking into Occidental University in California, and I'm curious if it would be a good fit for me. I've read a little about its programs and liberal arts focus, but I’m interested in hearing more about the student experience. What are the social and academic environments like? Do students feel supported and challenged here? Any feedback on what it's really like to be part of the Oxy community?

Occidental University, often referred to as Oxy, is a reputable institution, and being a small liberal arts college, it provides a unique and engaging experience for students. The student-to-faculty ratio is promisingly low, which means that students have ample opportunity to engage with their professors, asking questions and diving deep into their areas of interest. The liberal arts focus provides a well-rounded education, and many students find the interdisciplinary approach enlightening.

On the social side, Oxy is known for its residential housing system and intimate campus, which foster a sense of community. Given the school's location in Los Angeles, students also have many opportunities to explore outside the campus – with LA's vibrant cultural scene, stunning natural parks, and exciting social activities, there’s always something to do.

The academic environment can be rigorous yet rewarding, pushing students to broaden their horizons, develop critical thinking skills, and delve into new ideas. Multiple resources are available for academic support, such as access to tutoring and academic advising services.

The Oxy community is both diverse and close-knit. Many students take advantage of the opportunity to become active on campus – whether it’s joining a club, becoming part of student government, or participating in athletics.

However, like any college or university, the fit ultimately depends on what you're looking for. If you're interested in close-knit community with a liberal arts focus in a bustling urban environment, Oxy could be a good fit. But I always advise that getting in touch with current students, visiting the campus, or doing a virtual tour if possible can provide invaluable insights and help you make a well-informed decision.
