How competitive is the University of Manoa admissions process?

Hi everyone! I'm really interested in applying to the University of Manoa because I've always wanted to study in Hawaii. I'm curious about how competitive the admissions process is, especially for out-of-state students like me. Does anyone have stats or personal experiences to share? I'm trying to gauge my chances of getting in with my current GPA and extracurriculars. Also, any tips on how to make my application stand out would be awesome. Thanks in advance!

The University of Hawaii at Manoa is a moderately selective institution. According to the latest data, the acceptance rate stands at around 69%, indicating a relatively open admissions policy compared to more selective colleges. However, this doesn't mean that admission is guaranteed. The university will still be looking at academic rigor, grades, and other components of your application.

For context, the average GPA for incoming freshmen is around 3.7 on a 4.0 scale. Do keep in mind that these are averages—it's quite possible to be admitted with a slightly lower GPA, especially if other aspects of your application are strong.

Additionally, while SAT or ACT scores aren't the sole determinant of your admission, they have traditionally played a role. Given the recent move to test-optional policies by many schools due to the pandemic, Manoa may be more flexible with their testing requirements. However, having a good SAT or ACT score can't hurt and could be particularly beneficial if your GPA is on the lower side for Manoa's average admitted student.

University of Hawaii at Manoa does value the breadth and depth of your extracurricular involvement. While they don't necessarily require Tier 1 or 2 activities, meaningful engagement and demonstrated leadership in your extracurricular activities can make a positive contribution to your application.

To make your application stand out, focus on crafting an authentic and compelling personal essay that highlights your unique experiences, interests, and ambitions. Additionally, it might be worth conveying your interest in studying in Hawaii specifically—if there's a genuine reason behind your choice, make sure to incorporate that into your essay.

One last piece of advice: Pay attention to application deadlines and ensure you submit all necessary materials on time. Admissions can become more competitive closer to the deadline due to the increase in applications.

Remember that these are just guidelines and that the admissions process involves a degree of subjectivity. Best of luck with your application!
