What majors are offered at Oberlin College, and what's their focus?

I'm intrigued by Oberlin College and thinking about applying there, but I'd like to know more about their academic offerings. What majors do they offer, and how do they structure their programs? Are there certain fields they're particularly known for or excel in? I’m trying to narrow down my choices and any details on what makes Oberlin unique academically would be fantastic!

Oberlin College is renowned for its liberal arts programs and Conservatory of Music, offering a wide variety of majors that support a strong, comprehensive education. The College of Arts and Sciences provides 69 majors spanning from the humanities to physical and life sciences, as well as social and behavioral sciences. These include, but are not limited to, English, History, Biology, Chemistry, Psychology, Economics, and Environmental Studies.

If you're musically inclined, the Oberlin Conservatory of Music - one of the leading music conservatories in the nation - is certainly worth your attention. It offers performance majors in instruments from classical orchestral to jazz, voice, composition, conducting, music technology, and more.

No matter your major, Oberlin emphasizes critical thinking and aims to foster creativity and intellectual curiosity in its students. The typical class size is small, ensuring personalized attention from professors and an encouraging learning environment.

Oberlin is particularly renowned for its commitment to social justice and activism, which is infused into many of their academic offerings. It was the first college to adopt a policy to admit students of color and to grant bachelor's degrees to women in a coeducation program.

The college also encourages interdisciplinary studies. Every Interdisciplinary major involves two or more departments or programs; for example, Law and Society, or Mathematics and Computer Science. Plus, there's an option to design your major to meet your specific academic and career goals.

Lastly, in true liberal arts fashion, Oberlin also values experiential learning opportunities such as internships and research initiatives which allow students to learn beyond the classroom and gain practical experience relating to their field of interest. This emphasis on a well-rounded, diverse academic experience is part of what makes Oberlin unique.
