What Are Some Good Acting Colleges in New York?

I'm a high school junior interested in pursuing a career in acting. I've heard New York has a lot of great opportunities for aspiring actors due to its rich cultural scene. I'm looking for colleges in New York that offer strong acting programs. Does anyone have any recommendations, or personal experiences with programs they could share? Also, what kind of extracurriculars or portfolios might such colleges be looking for in their applicants? Thanks in advance for any advice!

New York indeed has highly regarded acting programs. Given its status as an international hub for theater, particularly with Broadway and many off-Broadway productions taking place there, it's a great place to study acting.

Starting with the most iconic, Juilliard School's Drama Division is highly respected worldwide. This program incorporates voice work, production, and text analysis, among other aspects of acting. Juilliard alumni are often found in Broadway shows, television series, and films.

New York University's Tisch School of the Arts offers a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Drama where students can study acting, directing, and theatrical producing, among other things. This program also encourages students to engage in complementary areas of theatre to broaden their skills.

Another noteworthy one is the Acting program at Pace University. Their program has a focus on training for the industry, such as for film, television, and voiceover work.

When it comes to what these colleges might be looking for, strong acting colleges would most likely look for your passion and commitment to the craft. To demonstrate this, you could consider participating in drama clubs, acting in school or community plays, or even joining an improv comedy group. Any experience that lets you express your creativity and competency in acting would be beneficial.

Regarding portfolios, it would largely depend on each specific program. Usually, they would involve monologue performances, contemporary or classic pieces, or both. They may also require an essay discussing your interest in acting, your influences, or your aspirations in the industry. It's advisable to check with each individual college what they expect in the portfolio and also consider your strengths in acting when you put together your portfolio.

Remember, as much as reputation and prestige matter, it is also crucial to consider if the culture and environment of the school resonate with your personalities and preferences. So, consider visiting these schools, if possible, or learning about them through online events and sessions or speaking to alumni.
