Interested in 2D animation colleges: where to start?

I've discovered a real passion for 2D animation and I'm considering pursuing it in college. I'm currently a junior, so I'm starting to explore potential schools. Do you guys know of any colleges that have strong programs in 2D animation? I'd love to hear personal experiences or recommendations. Should I be focusing on schools that are specifically art-focused, or do some larger universities offer solid programs too? Also, any advice on building a portfolio for applications?

When it comes to seeking out colleges with strong programs in 2D animation, a mix of art-focused schools and larger universities can offer excellent choices. The key is to research each school's curriculum, faculty, and student work to get an understanding of their approach to 2D animation.

For art-focused schools, CalArts in California and Ringling College of Art and Design in Florida are often acclaimed. Their programs not only focus on the technical side of animation but also emphasize storytelling, which is a vital aspect of successful animation.

On the other hand, many larger universities also offer comprehensive animation programs. You might want to consider something like the University of Southern California's (USC) Animation and Digital Arts Program, which has a solid reputation.

Creating a portfolio is a crucial part of your application process. Admissions teams typically look for a demonstration of basic art skills, creativity, and originality. Include life drawings (people, animals, and objects), and work that shows your understanding of movement and narratives like storyboarding or character sketches. Animation pieces you’ve completed will be important, too. Try to show variety and include only your best works. But remember, equally important is the demonstration of your passion and uniqueness through your work.

In the end, choosing a college for 2D animation comes down to how well the school’s curriculum aligns with your career goals and what kind of academic environment will help you to thrive.
