Tips for Finding Colleges in Metro Atlanta?

I'm starting my college search and I’m interested in exploring options in metro Atlanta. I've heard it's a vibrant area with lots to offer, but I'm not sure where to start. Does anyone have recommendations for colleges in that area or tips on how to make the most of a campus visit there? I'm particularly interested in schools with strong liberal arts programs, as well as schools that have a good campus culture. Also, any insights into what living in Atlanta might be like for a student would be super helpful!

There are numerous colleges in Metro Atlanta that you may find appealing. Georgia State University and Emory University are some of the prominent ones.

Georgia State University has a good selection of liberal arts programs in areas such as English, Speech, Philosophy, and History. Situated in the heart of Atlanta, it offers a distinctly urban campus experience with access to the city's diverse culture and business resources.

Emory University also offers a range of strong liberal arts disciplines and is known for its rigorous academic programs. Its campus gives you more of a traditional, somewhat secluded college environment, even though it's a short distance from downtown Atlanta.

Kennesaw State and Atlanta's Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs)—Spelman College, Morehouse College, and Clark Atlanta University—also offer vibrant environments and strong liberal arts education.

Be prepared to ask specific questions during your campus visits. For example, inquire about study abroad opportunities, internship placements, specific course structures, faculty-to-student ratios, and financial aid. Consider talking to current students and professors to get a feel for the campus culture.

Living in Atlanta as a student can be an exciting experience. It boasts a blend of southern and cosmopolitan vibes, with a vibrant arts scene, a thriving food culture, and numerous outdoor activities. Numerous business headquarters and start-ups offer potential internships and job opportunities. As with any city, the cost of living can be higher than in town or rural areas, so consider affordability when evaluating your options. However, many students find that the breadth of experiences and opportunities available in Atlanta makes it worth it.

Remember, while location and campus culture are important, they’re just part of the larger picture. Be sure to consider all aspects of your potential schools, including program strength, graduation rates, potential financial aid, and your comfort with the institution.
