What are some universities in Illinois that I should consider?

I'm starting my college search and I'm interested in schools that are located in Illinois. I know there's a mix of large universities and smaller colleges there, but I'm not sure which ones to explore. Can anyone share some recommendations of Illinois universities that offer strong programs and good campus life? Also, any freshman experience tips about these schools would be amazing!

The state of Illinois certainly has a diverse set of colleges and universities to choose from, each of them characterizing unique strengths and opportunities.

On the larger end of the spectrum, the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign (UIUC) is a nationally renowned public research university known for its programs in Engineering, Business, and Library and Information Science. UIUC's campus is vibrant and alive offering lots of activities and events year-round, with Big Ten sporting events being a major highlight for many students.

Northwestern University, located in Evanston, offers highly competitive programs in Journalism, Theatre, and Music through their Medill School and Bienen School. Northwestern fosters a balance of academic rigor with a nourishing student life experience. The proximity to Chicago gives students access to a bustling city environment.

Switching gears to smaller schools, you might want to consider liberal arts colleges like Knox College in Galesburg. It has a student-focused curriculum that emphasizes independent study and interdisciplinary learning. The supportive community fosters a sense of belonging amongst the student body.

In addition, Illinois Wesleyan University in Bloomington is notable for its programs in Music, Business, and Nursing, and offers a close-knit residential community experience for its students.

And let's not forget the Art Institute of Chicago, for those inclined towards the visual arts, it offers unique opportunities for collaborative work and highly specialized training.

Please remember, it's important to visit prospective colleges if possible. Tours, virtual or otherwise, can give you a sense of each school's unique atmosphere and 'personality', something that can greatly affect your college experience. It may also be beneficial to talk to current students or alumni about their experiences.
