Northeastern University's Political Science Major

I'm considering applying to Northeastern University, and I'm interested in their political science program. I've heard it's pretty well-regarded and has strong co-op opportunities, but I'd love to know more from current students or recent grads. How is the coursework, and what kinds of internships have people landed through the co-op? Also, how does the program prepare students for careers in politics or law? Any advice on what they're looking for in applicants?

Certainly, Northeastern University's political science program is known for a few key elements.

The Coursework: It consists of a blend of theoretical and practical applications of political science. Many classes incorporate discussions, presentations, and papers that aim to teach students how to interpret political data, understand political behavior, and gain a global perspective on politics. The faculty is generally well-regarded, with several professors having practical experience in politics or law, which they bring into their teaching. There's also the opportunity to combine political science with another major or minor, like international studies, environmental science, or economics. You can learn more about the program offerings on the department website: https://cssh.northeastern.edu/polisci/.

Co-Op Experience: As you mentioned, Northeastern's co-op program is a big asset. For political science majors, this can include working full-time for six months at a government agency, non-profit, law firm, or political campaign. Past students have worked at places like the Massachusetts State House, Amnesty International, and more. The co-op experience provides invaluable real-world experience and networking opportunities, and many students come away with a much clearer idea of their post-graduation plans.

Preparation for Careers: The internship experience combined with the theoretical foundation the courses provide make students attractive candidates for both political and law-related jobs post-graduation. For those looking to get into politics, many students find their co-op experience leads directly to job offers. For those aiming for law school, the department offers pre-law advising to help students make decisions about and prepare for their futures.

In terms of what they're looking for in applicants, beyond the general academic expectations, they appreciate students who are engaged in their communities and show an interest in politics or law, perhaps through high school extracurriculars or work experience. And, of course, an articulate expression of your interest in their program within your application essays will always go a long way.
