What are some good universities near Kansas City?

Hey everyone, I'm a high school junior starting to think about where I might want to apply to college. I'm curious about the universities in or near Kansas City because I've heard it's a vibrant place with a lot going on. Can anyone recommend some good colleges in the area that have strong academic programs, especially in the sciences and arts?

I'm interested in hearing about campus life there too—like if there are any unique traditions or things that students love about the schools. Also, if you know about any scholarship opportunities or clubs that I might not find on the college websites, that'd be awesome!

Thanks in advance for any info you can share!

First off, you're right about Kansas City—it has a vibrant culture, great music (especially Jazz), and a renowned arts scene.

On to colleges. Right in the heart of Kansas City, the University of Missouri-Kansas City (UMKC) is a solid choice that offers a wide spectrum of programs. For the sciences, the School of Biological and Chemical Sciences is a part of UMKC and offers undergraduate, graduate, and research opportunities. In the arts, the Kansas City Art Institute (KCAI), a partner institution of UMKC, offers top-notch arts education.

Just about 45 minutes west of Kansas City is the University of Kansas (KU), located in Lawrence. KU has a strong reputation for its science programs, specifically pharmaceutical sciences and chemistry. Their Spencer Museum of Art and Natural History Museum provides excellent resources for arts students.

In terms of campus life, KU's basketball games are a big part of student culture— the cheers at Allen Fieldhouse are electric. Additionally, UMKC has a unique tradition called "Roos give back" where students participate in a day of community service, symbolizing their commitment to Kansas City.

As for climbing clubs, UMKC's Outdoor Recreation program offers rock climbing. At KU, the Rock Chalk Revue, a student-run philanthropic organization, is very popular—it holds a talent show every year to raise money for local nonprofits.

In terms of scholarships, both universities offer a variety of scholarships based on academic achievement, demonstrated need, and personal background. KU, for example, offers the Chancellor’s Scholarship which provides $20,000 ($5,000 per year) to incoming freshmen who achieved a high school GPA of 3.85 or higher and have demonstrated leadership qualities. UMKC offers the Trustees' Scholars Program, which covers tuition, room/board, and books, and includes a $2000 stipend for study abroad, research, or internships.

Hope this information helps in your search!
