Pace University's Musical Theatre Program Experiences?

Hey everyone, I'm an aspiring musical theatre major checking out various programs around the country. I've got my eyes on Pace University as it's close to Broadway and seems to offer a lot of opportunities. Can anyone share their experiences with the Pace musical theatre program? How intense is the audition process, and what are the training and facilities like? Also, do students often get chances to audition or perform in real shows in NYC? Any insights on scholarships or financial aid for performing arts students here?

First off, Pace's Bachelor of Fine Arts in Musical Theatre is one of the more popular programs at the University and is quite competitive to get into. The audition process, similar to other schools, demands quite a bit from prospective students. Typically, the audition consists of two contrasting songs (32 bars each) and two contrasting monologues, along with a dance call. Auditions are generally conducted in February. You might consider attending summer workshops or pre-audition clinics to familiarize yourself with their approach and expectations.

The training at Pace is pretty comprehensive, integrating study in acting, singing, and dancing. The program has access to a wide range of facilities, including several rehearsal spaces, dance studios, costume shops, and a computer lab specifically for theatre design. Plus, the program regularly brings in industry professionals for masterclasses, which can provide invaluable experience and connections.

Speaking of connections, students at Pace do have opportunities to get involved with NYC's vibrant theater scene. While they are discouraged from auditioning for professional shows during term time due to the demanding schedule of the program, you'll find many students participate in summer stock or internships. After the first two years, students can get permission to audition for Broadway shows, and often do.

Scholarship-wise, Pace offers several merit-based scholarships. Most students in the program receive some kind of financial aid. In addition, there are external scholarships specifically for performing arts students you can apply to such as the Mabel Wilson Richards Scholarship Fund or Hal Leonard Vocal Competition. It is always a good idea to have an earnest conversation with the financial aid office about your circumstances.

The Pace University Musical Theatre program requires dedication and hard work but can offer excellent opportunities and resources. The proximity and active engagement with NYC's theater scene is a definite plus. Best of luck with your decision-making and potential auditions!
