What's it like to study architecture at UC Davis?

I'm super interested in studying architecture and UC Davis is one of my top choices. I'd love to hear from anyone with experience in the program. How are the classes and professors? Does the program offer unique opportunities or resources that you wouldn't find elsewhere? Any insights would be great as I weigh my options!

UC Davis's architecture program is well-regarded and offers a unique and diverse learning environment. The curriculum is rigorous and combines both innovative design theories and sustainable practices.

The professors are generally very knowledgeable, supportive and have a wide range of specialties. They appreciate creativity and challenging the norms. This makes for a dynamic and engaging learning environment where critical thinking is highly encouraged.

Students typically start their studies with a solid foundation in drafting and drawing, using both traditional hand drawing and computer-aided design software. As you progress through your studies, you'll have the opportunity to tackle more complex, practical projects, often working in teams that simulate a professional environment.

What's unique about this program is that it’s part of the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences. This gives you an opportunity to study architecture through a unique lens, with an emphasis on sustainable design and a close connection to the environment. The integration of sustainability within the curriculum is one of the highlights of studying architecture in UC Davis.

There are several research opportunities available for students, such as the Sustainable Design Academy and the Center for Design in the Public Interest. These cater to students who want to explore architecture from a scientific perspective or who wish to apply their design skills to socially relevant issues.

Another advantage is the Department's strong ties with local architectural firms and community outreach programs. This enables students to have real-world exposure and networking opportunities through internships and co-op programs.

As with any program, it will have its challenges - tight deadlines, intense workload, etc. But many students find it rewarding to see their ideas come to life in tangible, functional designs.

I hope you find this information helpful as you consider your options. It might also be a good idea to connect with current students or reach out to faculty members at UC Davis for more specific insights. Best of luck!
