How is the math department at the University of New Mexico?

I'm thinking about majoring in math and considering the University of New Mexico as one of my options. Can anyone share what the math department is like there? I'm interested in both pure and applied mathematics, so any information on the courses and professors would be great. Also, do they offer any unique research opportunities for undergraduates? I'm planning on visiting the campus soon, but hearing from students would really help me prepare.

The University of New Mexico (UNM) has a strong Mathematics and Statistics Department that caters to both pure and applied mathematics students. They offer a broad array of courses in pure mathematics, including algebra, analysis, and geometry, as well as applied subjects like mathematical biology, mathematical physics, and computational mathematics. Their curriculum is designed to provide a strong foundation in mathematics while imparting problem-solving and analytical skills.

The faculty at UNM is highly regarded for their work. I've heard many students speak highly of their dedication towards teaching and their willingness to help students understand and appreciate the subject.

One of the strengths of UNM’s math department is the opportunities for undergraduate research. They have a Program for Undergraduate Research in Mathematics (PURIM) which encourages undergraduates to get involved in independent study and research. This gives the students a chance to work closely with faculty and can be a unique experience that contributes to your academic growth.

However, your individual experience at UNM, like at any college, can greatly depend on your personal interests and the effort you put into the program. Your visit to the campus will be beneficial and I recommend checking out the facilities like the math labs, sitting in a math course if possible, and maybe meeting a faculty or two if you get the chance. This should give you a more direct feel of the UNM mathematics environment.
