How's the Theatre Program at University of Texas Austin?

I'm super interested in pursuing theatre for college and I'm looking at the University of Texas at Austin. I've heard great things about their program, but I'm not entirely sure what to expect. Can anyone share some details about their theatre major?

What are the opportunities for performances and productions like? Also, how competitive is it to get into their theatre program compared to other schools? I'd love to hear from current students or alumni about their experiences and any advice they might have for applying. Thanks a lot!

The University of Texas at Austin has a robust Theatre and Dance program that offers a variety of both academic and practical opportunities for its students. The program offers a BFA in Acting, a BFA in Dance, as well as a BA in Theatre and Dance, which allows for specialization in areas like Playwriting, Directing, or Design.

Performance opportunities are quite diverse. Along with mainstage productions that are directed by faculty, guest artists, and graduate students, there are also multiple student-run productions each semester through a group on campus called 'The Lab Theatre.' Moreover, there are opportunities to participate in the Cohen New Works Festival, which is a week-long showcase of new work created by UT students held every other Spring.

As for the competitiveness, it is relatively selective. The BFA in Acting is audition-based and the number of students accepted vary each year, but generally, they accept under 20 students for the program. This means that apart from good grades and strong letters of recommendation, an excellent audition piece is essential for admission.

The faculty consists of working professionals who have a wide range of industry experience, meaning students have the chance to learn from individuals who have practical, hands-on experience. This, combined with the resources available to students in a city like Austin that has a vibrant performing arts scene, makes the program quite unique.

Current students and alumni often mention the supportive and collaborative nature of the environment at UT Austin. They also consistently highlight the exceptional faculty, the number of performance opportunities available each semester, and the strength and diversity of the curriculum.

When applying, a strong suggestion is to take the time with your audition preparation. Choose material that not only displays a range of acting skills but also feels meaningful to you personally. This will assist you in standing out from the other students and present an authentic image of your acting abilities.

Additionally, research each of the programs in detail and consider reaching out to the department with specific questions. You might also want to ask if it's possible to chat with current students or alumni about their experiences. This can give you greater insight into what life as a theatre student at UT Austin is like.
