Cal Poly SLO is one of my top choices and I'm keen to know more about the dorms. How's the first-year housing? I've heard about different residence halls and it seems there are a lot of options. Any recommendations on where to live if I want a social atmosphere? Also, do students typically stay on campus after freshman year?
Cal Poly San Luis Obispo indeed has a diverse array of housing options for first-year students, and the experience you have in a particular residence can vary greatly depending on the community.
The five main residential complexes for first-year students are the Sierra Madre, Yosemite, South Mountain (which includes the Tenaya, Sequoia, Fremont, Santa Lucia, and Bishop halls), North Mountain, and yakʔitʸutʸu.
If you're looking for a more social atmosphere, the Yosemite and Sierra Madre complexes, known as the red bricks, might be a good fit for you. These residence halls are some of the larger dorms, housing about 270 students each, and are known for their active social scenes.
South Mountain halls, also known as the towers, house fewer students (around 80 per hall), but are still known to provide a communal experience. In North Mountain and yakʔitʸutʸu, you'll find suite-style and apartment-style living, respectively, where it might be a bit quieter and more independent.
As for staying on campus after freshman year, many students choose to move off-campus given the abundance of nearby housing options in San Luis Obispo, and the desire for more independence and less restrictive living arrangements. However, Cal Poly SLO does have continuing student housing options available as well, including on-campus apartments.
Remember, wherever you choose to live, the residence hall is just one aspect of your social life. There will be plenty of opportunities to meet people through classes, clubs, events, and other campus activities, regardless of your choice of dorm. Be proactive in attending social events and seeking out opportunities to engage with your peers, and you'll have a great social experience.
