Deciding Between UMass and Saint Louis University for College

I'm currently trying to decide between the University of Massachusetts and Saint Louis University for my college application. I know both schools offer strong academic programs, but I'm wondering how they compare in other aspects like campus life, student culture, and opportunities for extracurricular involvement.

I've heard UMass Amherst has a vibrant student life, but I've also read that Saint Louis University has a beautiful campus and great city vibe. How do these schools stack up against each other, especially for someone interested in engineering? Are there standout features at either campus that could sway my decision? Any input would be greatly appreciated!

Comparing UMass Amherst and Saint Louis University is an interesting task as both have their unique points of attraction.

UMass Amherst, as a larger public university within a charming college town, offers a diverse range of research opportunities, particularly in the engineering field. Many students characterize UMass as having a strong sense of school spirit, with robust traditions that range from athletic events to yearly celebrations. Moreover, the school's size implies a broad range of student organizations and clubs for virtually every interest, enhancing the opportunity for extracurricular involvement.

As for Saint Louis University, located in the heart of a major city, it offers its own unique experience. The campus is indeed beautiful, and students often comment on the engaging community service and social justice-oriented culture, reflecting its Jesuit roots. It's smaller than UMass, which could mean more personalized attention in your studies. The Parks College of Engineering, Aviation and Technology at SLU is well-regarded and offers unique concentrations like Aviation, where UMass may have more traditional engineering disciplines.

A significant difference to consider is the location and surrounding community. If you're drawn to city life, internships, and career opportunities that come with it, SLU could be appealing. On the other hand, if the quintessential college town vibe is more your speed and you're excited about a larger student body, UMass could be the way to go.

Lastly, I would suggest considering financial aspects, including any scholarships or aid each school might offer. A meeting with the financial aid office or a session with the net price calculator of both schools could provide insightful information. And should the pandemic situation allow, consider if you can tour the campuses or virtually connect with current students in each engineering program to get a firsthand account of their experiences.

Good luck with your decision-making process!
