Suggestions for colleges supporting students with intellectual disabilities

Hi! I'm seeking advice on colleges that are particularly supportive of students with intellectual disabilities. I have a cousin who's looking to apply to colleges soon, and we're trying to figure out which institutions offer the best resources and programs. It's really important that he finds a place where he feels included and can thrive both academically and socially. If you know of any colleges with strong support systems, specialized learning programs, or inclusive campus cultures, please let me know. Personal experiences or tips on what to look for would be greatly appreciated!

One institution that comes to mind is the University of Iowa, known for its REACH Program (Realizing Educational and Career Hopes). It’s a comprehensive transition and postsecondary program that empowers students with intellectual, cognitive, and learning disabilities to achieve their personal and academic goals. They have inclusive social activities and provide support such as academic coaching and career counseling.

The University of Arizona's SALT Center (Strategic Alternative Learning Techniques) also is renowned for its services to students with learning and attention challenges. The SALT Center offers individualized educational planning, tutoring, coaching on life skills, and weekly meetings with strategy instructors to help students navigate college.

Eastern New Mexico University's Disability Services office is also exceptional in helping students with disabilities access academic accommodations and support services. It's particularly noted for its proactive and collaborative approach to creating an inclusive environment.

Lastly, Landmark College in Vermont might be a unique option to consider. It was the first institution in the U.S. specifically designed for students with learning disabilities, ADHD, and autism spectrum disorder. The campus culture is highly inclusive and understanding of diverse learning needs.

As you research, consider reaching out directly to Disability or Accessibility Services offices at prospective colleges to get comprehensive and updated information about their unique offerings. Don't hesitate to ask them about their process for implementing accommodations, the specific programs they offer, and the ongoing support available for students on campus. Inquire about the campus culture to gauge how inclusive and understanding the community is toward students with disabilities.

Whether a specific school is on your radar or not, bear in mind the key components you're looking for - specialized learning programs, inclusive campus cultures, and effective support systems. Use these guiding principles to assess the suitability of a school, it could surprise you!
