First-hand experiences with Brandeis University dorms?

Considering applying to Brandeis University and trying to get a sense of what living on campus would be like. Can current or former students share what the dorms are like at Brandeis? Are they comfortable and clean? How's the social scene—do most students stay on campus during weekends and participate in events? Knowing more about the housing situation could really help me with my decision on whether this school is the right fit for me. Thanks in advance for your help!

Most first-year students at Brandeis University live in one of two dormitory complexes: Massell or North. Both dorms are coed, but single-gender and coed floors are available. The two complexes each contain a mix of quads and singles. The quads consist of two doubles with a shared bathroom, while the singles provide a private space for those who prefer to live alone.

The dorms themselves are generally clean and well-maintained as Brandeis works hard to resolve any maintenance issues promptly. There are also laundry facilities in each building. Even though these aren't exactly state-of-the-art, they're adequately maintained and well-functioning. It's noteworthy that the dorms do not have air conditioning, so it can get hot at the beginning and end of the academic year.

In terms of the social scene, Brandeis has a very active and engaged campus life, especially during the weekends. There are always on-campus activities to participate in, such as club events, sports games, and theater performances. Many students stay on campus over the weekend and hang out in lounges, dining halls, or common areas in the dormitories.

As an interesting aside, each first-year dorm hosts a "quad night" event at the beginning of the year, which helps to foster community and allows students to get to know each other. This can be a great opportunity to meet people who live in your hall or on your floor.

If you're specifically interested in the sense of community at a residence hall, Brandeis also offers special interest housing, including Gender Inclusive Housing and Substance-Free Housing.

It's also worth mentioning that many upperclassmen choose to live in on-campus apartments or suites, which offer additional amenities like full kitchens and shared living spaces. This means that, as a first-year student, you have options for different living circumstances as you progress through your college years.

Ultimately, like any college or university, the experience will depend on what you make of it. Even in the dorms, some people are more social, while others are more private, and the same goes for participating in activities or staying on campus over the weekends.

Hope this offers a bit of additional insight into the on-campus living experience at Brandeis!
