What is required to complete the FAFSA?

I'm prepping to fill out the FAFSA, and I'm a little stressed about getting everything right. I know it's crucial for financial aid, but what exactly do I need to have ready before beginning the application? Any specific documents or pieces of information that are super important?

I've heard horror stories about delays and mistakes that can mess up aid packages, so I'm hoping to avoid that by being prepared. Also, are there common pitfalls I should be aware of when filling it out? Any tips for a smooth process would be awesome. Thanks!

It's great that you're getting a head start on understanding the FAFSA process! For a smooth process, organization is key. Here are the items you will need:

1. Your Social Security Number: Make sure you have this handy, and double-check the number for accuracy. Mistakes here can create major hiccups later.

2. Your Parents' Social Security Numbers: If your parents don't have Social Security numbers, you'll enter 000-00-0000.

3. Your driver’s license number: If you don’t have a driver’s license, don’t worry, it’s not required.

4. Your Alien Registration number: if you're not a U.S. citizen but meet Federal Student Aid’s basic eligibility requirements.

5. Federal tax information: You (and your parents, if you're a dependent) need to provide details from your tax returns. The easiest way is to use the IRS Data Retrieval Tool, which transfers your tax information directly into the FAFSA form.

6. Records of untaxed income: such as child support received, interest income, and veterans' non-education benefits, if applicable.

7. Information on cash, savings and checking account balances, investments, including stocks and bonds and real estate but do not include the home in which you live, and business and farm assets: This information gives an overview of your financial situation and is a key determinant in your expected family contribution i.e your Student Aid Index (SAI).

8. A list of schools you're considering: You will need to provide the codes for each school, which you can find on the FAFSA website.

Some common pitfalls to avoid are; 1) Make sure to fill out the FAFSA as soon as possible after December 1st, because some types of financial aid are awarded on a first-come, first-served basis, and 2) Ensure that your information is accurate and consistent, as discrepancies can delay the processing of your FAFSA.

Applying for financial aid can be overwhelming, but as long as you have all this information on hand and follow the instructions carefully, you should be off to a good start. Good luck!
