Exploring career planning as a high school student

I've been thinking a lot about my future and the different paths I could take after high school. I'm wondering what steps I should consider when planning my career. Are there any resources, maybe online sites or events, that other high schoolers have found useful? I'm trying to figure out not only what I might want to study in college but also what kinds of careers I might enjoy. Any advice or personal stories about how you approached career planning in high school would be awesome!

I love your proactive approach to career planning—you're on the right track. First, it's important to have a good understanding of your interests and strengths. What subjects interest you most in school? Do you have hobbies or passions that could be professionally fulfilling? Do you prefer working solo or in a team? Dig deep and ask yourself these kinds of questions.

Keeping a journal of your evolving interests can be useful. Not only does this allow you to observe how your interests change over time, but also helps you reflect on why certain topics or activities spark your intrigue. Throughout this process, it's crucial to be open-minded and flexible, as what you want now might change in the future.

In terms of resources, the Bureau of Labor Statistics' Occupational Outlook Handbook is a good place to start. It provides detailed outlines of various professions, including required education, median pay, and future demand. You could also check out online career exploration platforms that might offer career assessment tests designed to match your interests and abilities with potential careers.

Dedicated workshops, job shadowing opportunities, internships, and mentorship programs can also provide profound insights into what a specific career might entail. These experiences not only expose you to different careers but also allow you to interact with professionals in those fields. Regularly attending career fairs and talking with professionals can offer a lot of valuable insights as well.

Remember, discovering what you don’t like or want to do can be just as valuable as discovering what you do enjoy. So, don't be afraid to explore and try different things. Good luck with your career planning journey!
