What is the Prudential Spirit of the Community Award?

I've been involved in a lot of community service during high school, and I recently heard about the Prudential Spirit of the Community Award. Can someone explain what this award is all about and how I might be able to apply for it? It's something I'm interested in because I think it could recognize the volunteer work I've done and maybe even help with college applications or scholarships. What are the qualifications or achievements they look for, and how competitive is it to receive this award? Any tips for making a strong application would be awesome!

The Prudential Spirit of the Community Awards is a program that celebrates middle-level and high-school students' volunteer commitment to their communities. It's the United States' largest youth recognition program based exclusively on volunteer community service and it's conducted annually in partnership with the National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP).

To apply for this award, you should be engaged in a volunteer activity that occurred at least partly during the 12 months before the date of your application. Students in grades 5-12 are eligible to apply. The requirements include:

1. Availability of documentation that validates the service.

2. The service can be one-time or ongoing.

3. The activity does not benefit your family members.

The application typically opens in September and the deadline is usually in November. You can apply through your school or a participating organization if you're home-schooled or if your school does not participate.

The awards are very competitive given their national standing, recognition, and the rewards involved. State-level honorees receive a $1,000 scholarship, a silver medallion, and a trip to Washington, D.C. National honorees receive an additional $5,000 scholarship along with a gold medallion and a crystal trophy.

For a successful application, focus on the depth and breadth of your community service rather than the volume of hours. Highlight your initiative, effort, and impact. Showcase any leadership roles or unique activities where you have made a significant difference. Be authentic and passionate when conveying your story. Try to also include how your service goes beyond a normal high school activity.

Remember to follow the application instructions carefully, check your application for errors, and submit it before the deadline. Good luck!
