Seeking scholarships for families affected by cancer

I'm currently a high school junior and my family has been significantly impacted by cancer. I'm starting to research scholarships, and I'd love to know if there are specific scholarships available for students like me whose families are dealing with cancer. If anyone knows of opportunities or has had experience applying for such scholarships, I'd really appreciate your advice. It would be great to know about eligibility criteria, the application process, and any tips you might have for standing out. Support in this area would really help lighten my family's financial load as I consider college.

Many scholarships didn't come into existence solely to benefit academically skilled students, but to aid those who are going through unexpected hardships, like families living with cancer. So your desire to seek scholarships tailored to your circumstances is not only welcomed but expected.

One scholarship you may consider is the Patient Advocate Foundation’s (PAF) Scholarships for Survivors program. PAF awards scholarships to students who have been diagnosed with or treated for a serious disease within the past 5 years. The scholarship amount is $3,000 annually and is renewable for a maximum of 4 years. You must write an essay about how your diagnosis has impacted your life and your future goals.

Another option is the Cancer for College scholarship. They offer a variety of scholarships, including general ones and others specific to certain states or universities. The scholarships range from $1,000 per year upwards.

The Ulman Foundation also offers the Ulman Cancer Fund for Young Adults, giving scholarships to young adults directly affected by cancer through their own diagnosis or the diagnosis of a loved one.

In terms of applications, you typically have to write an essay or personal statement detailing how cancer has affected your life, family, and academic career. Some applications may also ask for proof of enrollment or acceptance into a post-secondary institution, and a letter from your healthcare provider confirming your family's experience with cancer.

For standing out, make your personal story as genuine and sincere as possible. Committees often look for resilience and perseverance through trying times, so highlighting how you've overcome challenges related to your family's experience with cancer can be effective. You can also discuss how this experience influenced your future career aspirations or fueled your desire to contribute to the medical or cancer research field if that applies to you.

Remember, what matters most in your essays and applications is your personal story and the impact cancer has had on your life. Always review scholarship requirements and prepare well in advance to have all the required documents, and meet any necessary deadlines.
