Room and Board at Rutgers: What Are the Dorms Like?

I'm looking at Rutgers as one of my potential colleges to apply to and I'm super curious about what their campus dorms are like. How are the living conditions there, and what types of dorms do they offer? I prefer having a little more space and privacy, so I'm wondering if they have any suite-style options available. Any info from current or former students would be awesome!

Rutgers University, being a large public university, offers a wide range of housing options across its New Brunswick campus. The type of dorm you end up with could be dependent on which of the five residential campuses (Busch, College Avenue, Cook/Douglass, or Livingston) you're placed on, as each has its own housing style.

For example, if you prefer suite-style dorms, Busch and Livingston campuses would be your best bets. Busch campus has suite-style dorms in the Silvers Apartments, where four students share two bedrooms, a bathroom, and a common area. On Livingston, the Livingston Apartments offer similar accommodations, but also include a kitchen.

The College Avenue campus, on the other hand, is home to traditional dorms with communal bathrooms, but also includes newer, more modern housing options. The Yard, for example, is an apartment-style complex that houses primarily upperclassmen, though it's quite competitive to get a spot there.

Regarding living conditions, as with any college dormitory, experiences vary. Many students speak highly of the community aspect of living on campus, as it's easy to make friends and be close to amenities like libraries and dining halls. However, keep in mind that some of the older dorms may not have modern furnishings or air conditioning, which can be something to consider if these aspects are essential to you.

Ultimately, Rutgers offers a significant amount of diversity in its housing options, so it's just a matter of what your personal preference and priorities are. Good luck with your application process!
