Banneker/Key Scholarship Tips and Insights?

I'm really interested in the Banneker/Key Scholarship and was hoping someone could provide more info on it. I'm a junior starting to prepare for the scholarship application process. What kind of criteria do they look for, and how competitive is it really? Any past recipients here who can share how they stood out or what their application process looked like? I'm excited but also nervous about my chances and would love some guidance!

The Banneker/Key Scholarship is the most prestigious scholarship offered at the University of Maryland (UMD), and it's indeed quite competitive. This program awards top-performing in-state and out-of-state high school seniors by covering full tuition, mandatory fees, room & board, and includes a book allowance.

As for the selection criteria, scholarship recipients typically represent the top few percent of incoming students and often come with a compelling academic and extracurricular track record. They are usually students who were highly successful in high school and participated in rigorous coursework, including AP or IB classes. High standardized test scores were traditionally important, too, but UMD has moved to a test-optional policy, meaning ACT/SAT scores are not required but can be submitted if you believe they will enhance your application.

Extracurricular engagement also carries weight in the selection process. The committee is looking for students who demonstrate a high-level of engagement in a few extracurriculars, preferably Tier 1 or Tier 2 activities, rather than a wider, but less impressive range of activities. Leadership roles, community service, and experiences that highlight initiative are particularly valuable.

Essays are another vital component of the application. Be sure to showcase your experiences and accomplishments, and how they have shaped who you are. Avoid cliche topics and focus on presenting your personal story in a thoughtful and engaging way.

The process is indeed competitive, but it certainly doesn't mean it's out of reach. Be sure to focus on presenting the best version of yourself in terms of academic achievement, leadership, and personal values in your application. Consider asking a teacher or mentor to review your application materials, especially your essays, to provide feedback and help ensure they best represent you.

Good luck with the process! Your proactive approach is definitely a step in the right direction.
