How does the dormitory experience at Northeastern University compare?

Northeastern University is one of my top choices, mainly for its co-op program, but I'm also interested in what the dorm life is like. Are the dorms modern and well-equipped? I've read mixed reviews online, so I was hoping someone who has lived there could give me their opinion. How do you find the roommate matching system, and is it easy to make friends? Thanks in advance for any insights you could share!

Northeastern University is known for its variety of housing options. Some residences have been recently renovated and offer modern conveniences, while others are a bit older and have their historic charm. As a first-year student, you can expect to live in traditional dorms that usually entail a shared room with hall bathrooms.

Some first-year students find themselves in the International Village or East Village, which are among the most modern and well-equipped facilities with air conditioning and private or semi-private bathrooms. Others might reside in Stetson East or Stetson West, which are a bit older but have a great sense of community. You could even end up in smaller residences like Kerr Hall, which some students describe as cozy.

As for the roommate matching system, it typically works through a questionnaire that you fill out during the housing application process. The questionnaire captures your habits and preferences that the system uses to match you with a compatible roommate. Of course, no system is perfect, and much depends on your ability to communicate openly and compromise with your roommate on certain issues. Nonetheless, many students find this system to be effective.

Making friends in the dorms is often a natural process since there are many shared spaces. Common areas in the dorms, orientation activities, residence meetings, and shared classes are all opportunities to get to know people. At times, the Resident Assistants will also organize social events, providing another opportunity to connect with those living around you.

Remember that living on campus can be a great aspect of your college experience, but everyone's needs and preferences are different. It's best to keep an open mind and be willing to adapt to a new living situation. Good luck!
