Jobs for 15 Year Olds in Chicago: Where to Start?

I'm 15 and living in Chicago, and I'm looking to find my first job. Does anyone know what kinds of jobs are available for someone my age in this city? I've done some babysitting and pet sitting, but I'm interested in broadening my options. Are there retail, food service, or other job opportunities that hire young teens in Chicago? Any tips for balancing work with school would also be greatly appreciated!

Absolutely! Starting to work at a young age is a great way to build strong work ethic and gain practical experience. The types of jobs available to a 15-year-old can be limited due to labor laws, but there are still plenty of options around Chicago.

First, let's talk about job options. You already have experience with babysitting and pet sitting, both of which are great paths to continue on. You might also consider becoming a dog walker. Retail and food service jobs can be a good fit, too. Grocery stores often hire teenagers to work as baggers or stockers. For food service, some fast food chains hire 15-year-olds as team members, depending on local labor laws.

You could also look into job opportunities at local parks and recreation departments. These jobs often involve working at community events, maintaining facilities, or helping out at a summer camp. Local libraries also sometimes hire young teens to help with sorting books, running programs, or basic administrative tasks.

Yard work or cleaning jobs can be plentiful as well. Many homeowners are willing to hire teenagers for these tasks, especially during the summer months.

As for balancing work and school, this is something you'll need to carefully consider. Since you're under 16, there are rules about the number of hours you can work a week while school is in session (18 hours per week in Illinois). Be sure to plan your schedule, prioritize tasks, and adjust as necessary. Remember that school comes first.

Begin your job search by asking around your neighborhood, checking with local businesses, or using online job search platforms. Just make sure to double-check the age requirement for any position you apply to.

This is a great step into adulthood. Best of luck with your job search!
