Deciding between UH and Texas A&M as a high schooler

I'm a high school junior trying to get a head start on my college decision process, and I'm looking at both the University of Houston and Texas A&M. How do these two compare in terms of student life, academic programs, and overall campus vibe? I'd appreciate any perspectives from current students or alumni to help me weigh my options.

Both the University of Houston (UH) and Texas A&M University offer unique college experiences.

Let's start with student life. Texas A&M, in College Station, has an intensely spirited environment. Known as "Aggie Culture," it's defined by school pride, traditions, and strong community, especially around their SEC sports events. At UH, located in the heart of Houston, students have the advantage of diverse cultural experiences available in the fourth largest city in the U.S. UH also has strong school spirit, but the atmosphere might feel a bit more urban and less traditional than at Texas A&M.

In terms of academics, the strength of the program can vary greatly depending on your intended major. Texas A&M is especially known for its engineering, business, and agriculture programs. UH shines in areas like hotel and restaurant management via its Hilton College. Both schools offer strong programs, and it really comes down to your area of study.

As for campus life, the two universities offer vastly different experiences. Texas A&M is in a relatively small city and its campus life is closely knit, with an emphasis on tradition. There's a strong residential culture, and the campus is often described as friendly and welcoming. UH, on the other hand, is located in a major city with direct access to robust city life, including museums, concerts, and diverse food options. While there is residential housing, UH has more of a commuter culture than A&M.

Ultimately, choosing between the two comes down to what kind of environment you thrive in, and where you feel you can grow both academically and personally. Consider visiting both campuses if possible to get a strong feel for each environment.
