What are the Cornell dorms like?

I’m considering applying to Cornell University and I’m curious about the dorm life there. How is the overall atmosphere in the dorms, and are there any particular ones you’d recommend based on location or amenities? Also, how’s the roommate situation typically like, and are first-year students guaranteed housing? Any info about dining options nearby would be awesome too!

When it comes to dorm life at Cornell University, the overall atmosphere is generally friendly and conducive to academic success. As a member of the freshman class, you're guaranteed on-campus housing and you will reside in the North Campus residential communities.

The dorms on North Campus are generally closer to the dining halls and include a mix of traditional dorms and townhouse/apartment-style housing. These include The Townhouses, Mews Hall, Court-Kay-Bauer, Donlon Hall, Ruth Bader Ginsburg Hall, and others. On the other hand, West Campus has more Gothic-style dorms and is closer to the central campus.

The roommate situation can vary. Some students get single rooms, while others share double or triple rooms. Roommate assignments are usually based on mutual preferences and compatibility based on the housing application, which includes lifestyle questions to help match you with a compatible roommate.

In terms of dining, there are a number of options available both on-campus and off-campus. For example, on North Campus, you've got Appel Commons and Morrison Dining which offer a variety of food options. Off-campus, Collegetown has plenty of restaurants and cafes, offering everything from Thai cuisine to bagels, that are a short walk away.

Remember, each dorm's vibe can be unique and cater to different preferences. It might be helpful to organize virtual tours or check out online reviews and forums for more specific information about each dorm. Getting a feel for each dorm's personality can help you find the best fit for your lifestyle and needs. Good luck with your decision!
