What documents do I need for filling out the FAFSA?

Hey, I'm planning to start working on my FAFSA application soon, but I'm kinda confused about all the documents I need to gather before starting. I know I need some tax forms, but is there anything else that's important? I've heard about needing social security numbers and maybe some financial records. Does anyone have a checklist or know where I can find a comprehensive list of all the documents required? Any advice from people who've already done this would be super appreciated!

Sure, I'd be happy to provide a checklist of the information and documents you'll need to complete the FAFSA:

1. Your Social Security Number: This is an essential part of the FAFSA as it's unique to you and allows the government to keep track of your application.

2. Your Parents' Social Security Numbers: If you are a dependent student, you'll need your parents' Social Security numbers as well.

3. Your Driver's License Number: If you have a driver's license, it's good practice to have it on hand.

4. Your Alien Registration Number: If you're not a U.S. citizen, you'll need your Alien Registration Number.

5. Federal Tax Returns: For the 2024-2025 year, you'll need information from your (and your spouse's, if married) 2022 federal tax return. If you're a dependent student, you'll also need your parents' information.

6. Records of Un-taxed Income: These might include child support received, interest income, and veterans non-education benefits for you (and for your parents if you are a dependent student).

7. Records of Assets: This includes savings and checking account balances, as well as investments such as stocks, bonds, real estate, etc. Do not include the home in which you live.

8. List of Schools: You will need to include every school you're considering, even if you haven't applied yet. The FAFSA will send your information directly to these schools.

Before beginning your FAFSA, it's also beneficial to create a Federal Student Aid ID, which allows you to sign your FAFSA electronically and access other Federal Student Aid websites.

It's always a good idea to have these documents organized and readily available before you sit down to complete your FAFSA. That way, the process will be smooth and largely interruption-free. Good luck with your FAFSA application!
