What Are Some Good Colleges in Iowa?

I'm starting to put together my college list, and I'm really curious about options in Iowa. I know there are some big schools like the University of Iowa and Iowa State. I’m wondering what the vibes are like at these schools and if they have good programs for someone interested in engineering. Are there other less-known colleges in Iowa that I should check out as well?

You're correct that the University of Iowa and Iowa State University are the more well-known universities in Iowa, and both have strong reputations. They have distinct perks that could cater to different types of students.

University of Iowa, based in Iowa City, has a vibrant campus life with plenty of cultural offerings and sports activities. Outside of academics, they have a nationally recognized writing program, and for engineering, their Biomedical Engineering program tends to stand out.

On the other hand, Iowa State University, located in Ames, is known for its extensive STEM programs and particularly renowned for its Engineering program. Bigger emphasis is placed on research here, which could be a golden opportunity if you're interested in that.

For less-known colleges, you might consider Drake University in Des Moines, largely known for its Law and Pharmacy programs, but also has a reputable College of Arts and Sciences. Another strong school in Iowa is Grinnell College. It's a small liberal arts school with a focus on student-led discussions and independent projects rather than traditional exams. While they do not have a specific engineering program, they have a robust physics department which might appeal to you.

I would suggest researching more on these colleges, taking into account factors like location, academic culture, extracurricular activities, and scholarship opportunities to understand which might be the best fit for you. You can also get in touch with the admissions offices of these colleges to learn more about their engineering programs.
