What colleges have strong veterinary programs?

I'm passionate about animals and have always thought about becoming a vet. Now that I'm starting to think seriously about college, I'm trying to find schools with strong veterinary programs. Do you know which colleges have the best rep for this field? Also, what should I look for in a veterinary program in terms of courses, hands-on experience, or even opportunities for research? Any guidance or personal experiences would be greatly appreciated.

Starting out, it's important to know that there isn't a "pre-vet" major like there is for "pre-med." Instead, you'll typically pursue an undergraduate degree in a related field such as biology, animal science, or zoology. You then apply for veterinary school, similar to medical school.

Here are a few undergraduate institutions that have great programs/directories in animal science, agriculture, and biology:

1. Cornell University: Its College of Agriculture and Life Sciences is one of the top ranking in the US. They also have a vet school, so there should be plenty of opportunities for research and internships.

2. University of California, Davis: College of Agricultural and Environmental Science is excellent and likewise, has a veterinary school which could provide hands-on opportunities.

3. Texas A&M University: A well-known program particularly for those interested in large animal veterinary medicine.

All these universities not only provide solid foundational knowledge, but also expose students to research opportunities, internships, and experience in the field. Look for courses in subjects like animal biology, animal nutrition, animal production systems, reproduction, genetics, and microbiology, which will serve as a solid base for your vet school application.

When it comes to vet school, the best programs are selective but renowned: Cornell University, University of California, Davis; Colorado State University; North Carolina State University; and Ohio State University.

In addition to strong academics, consider opportunities for undergraduate research relevant to animals, vet or animal-related internships, study abroad, and clubs/organizations relating to animals. Take advantage of any opportunities for hands-on veterinary experience or shadowing a veterinarian, as this will be a crucial component for your vet school application.

Remember, directly applicable experience can be crucial in gaining admission into veterinary school, so make sure to take advantage of hands-on opportunities and internships from the early stages of your college career. Research is highly valued, especially if it involves animals you're interested in working with as a vet. Community service and leadership experience in vet or animal-related clubs or organizations are also desirable. Being a competitive applicant for veterinary school is not just about grades and test scores, but evidencing a deep commitment to animal welfare and veterinary science.

Always consider where you envision yourself working eventually. For some, being close to rural areas to work with farm animals might be more advantageous; for others, urban settings with small domestic pets could be the goal.

Lastly, if you have the opportunity to do so, visit any potential campus! The environment and culture of a university can greatly influence your education and professional growth. Best of luck on your journey!
