Tips for Entering Art Competition Scholarships

I've been working on some art pieces that I'm really proud of, and I heard about art competition scholarships as a way to earn some college money. What are these competitions usually looking for in terms of submissions?

Do different competitions have different themes or guidelines, and how crucial is it to follow them closely? Also, if anyone has participated in these competitions before, how did you prepare and how was your experience? Would love any advice or past experiences shared!

Art competition scholarships are a fantastic way to put your talents to work for your college funding—good for you for considering this avenue!

Different art contests indeed have varying themes and guidelines which are crucial to adhere to. Many art scholarships fixate on specific themes or subjects, styles, or even mediums. For instance, some might ask for a piece on a social issue, while others may look for abstract expressionism. Ensuring that your submissions align with these guidelines is pivotal. Don't just modify an existing work to fit the theme; it's usually obvious to the judges. Instead, take the time to create something new that truly embodies the competition's prompts or themes.

Critically understanding and following submission guidelines goes beyond just the theme. It could also encompass aspects like the medium, size, the way the work should be mounted or framed, the format for digital submissions, etc. Neglecting these could result in your artwork being disqualified, irrespective of its quality.

In terms of preparation, I recommend beginning with a comprehensive research phase. Look at previous winning submissions if they're available. Understand what the committee appreciates—novel ideas, technical skill, unique perspectives, etc. This can give you a better grasp of what you might want to focus on in your project.

Another preparation strategy involves creating your art consistently. Even if you're not working on the contest piece, regular practice can help you refine your skills, try out new things, and keep your creativity flowing.

As for experiences, while you may hear both success stories and tales of things not going exactly as planned, remember that each experience is unique. As an artist, your journey of expression is individual and subjective with every competition serving as an opportunity for growth and learning, no matter the outcome.

Remember to have fun with it, too! Let your passion shine through in your work. Judges can often sense the joy and dedication behind a piece, which helps create a connection.

Best of luck with your submissions!
