What is it like attending the biggest college campus in America?

I've been researching universities and came across the fact that some schools have massive campuses. I'm curious about what day-to-day life is like for students at these kinds of schools. How do students manage getting around such a large campus, and are there any unique advantages to attending a university with the biggest college campus in America?

Also, does having a larger campus affect social life or extracurricular activities compared to smaller campuses? It would be really helpful to hear about the experiences of people who have attended schools with expansive campuses.

At a university with a large campus, such as the Arizona State University, which boasts one of the largest campuses in the U.S., day-to-day life can be a bit different than at smaller institutions.

To manage getting around the sizable grounds, students typically use a variety of transport options, such as bikes, scooters, longboards, or walking, depending on the distance of their classes. Many of these universities also have intra-campus buses or shuttles that run frequently to help students commute between different parts of the campus. Timing is key—some students might need to leave an extra 10-20 minutes early to make it on time for classes or appointments.

One advantage of attending such institutions is the number of resources at your disposal. Large universities often have multiple libraries, research centers, and dining options. Additionally, you'll have access to a wide variety of academic programs, and the chance to meet and learn from a diverse student body hailing from many different backgrounds.

As for the social life and extracurricular activities, having a larger campus can sometimes feel overwhelming due to the number of students. On the flip side, it also means an abundant number of clubs and organizations to get involved in. So, whatever your interests are—be it academic clubs, sports, arts or social causes—there is most likely an existing group you can join.

Large universities tend to have vibrant sports cultures and their games often attract large crowds, effectively creating a sense of community and school spirit. You might find yourself joining thousands of other students at a football game or a huge on-campus concert.

That said, the experience at a large university greatly depends on the individual student's preferences. Some might thrive in a larger environment while others might prefer a smaller college atmosphere. Prioritizing what you want from your college experience—whether it’s research opportunities, a large social scene, or a variety of academic options—can help you determine if attending a university with a large campus is ideal for you.
