Typically, how many months is a college semester?

I'm doing some research to understand the potential college schedule I'll be dealing with in a couple of years. I know semesters are a big part of college life, but I'm not sure how long they typically last in months.

Are there differences depending on the college or the country, and if so, what might those differences look like? Any insights would be great as I start planning my college journey!

In most universities in the United States, a semester is approximately 15 weeks or roughly 3.5-4 months long. This includes universities that follow a traditional two-semester academic calendar (which includes a fall semester usually starting around August or September and ending in December and a spring semester usually starting in January and ending in May). That said, each semester includes classes, study weeks, and final exam periods, but does not usually include breaks such as Thanksgiving, Winter, or Spring Break.

It's also worth noting the existence of summer semesters, which are typically shorter in length (often around 8-12 weeks) and are optional for students who wish to take additional classes or speed up their degree.

Although this model is very widespread, it's not the only type of academic calendar. Some institutions, for example, follow a quarter system (popular primarily on the West Coast). In this model, the academic year is divided into four parts: Fall, Winter, Spring, and Summer. Each quarter lasts about 10-13 weeks, making it roughly 2.5 months long. Again, the Summer quarter is usually optional.

When considering international schools, the academic calendar can vary substantially. For instance, in the UK, universities usually operate on a three-term academic year, where each term is around 10-13 weeks long.

Keep in mind that each school's academic calendar, including the exact start and end dates and the length and timing of breaks, is usually readily available on their official website, so it's worth checking those for the most accurate and specific information!
