How does NYU handle merit scholarships?

I'm starting to look at universities and NYU has always been one of my dream schools. However, attending without some financial aid might be a bit tough for my family. I've heard mixed things about merit scholarships from NYU. Do they offer them, and if so, what are the criteria generally like? Are they mostly reserved for students with exceptional achievements, or is there a chance for students with strong academics and extracurriculars too? Any insights or personal experiences would be super helpful!

New York University (NYU) does offer a range of merit scholarships that you can certainly consider applying for. While family income and need do play a part in some scholarships, others are more focused on academic achievement and involvement in extracurricular activities.

In addition to financial need, the university considers a student's academic and artistic or athletic achievements when awarding scholarships. Suppose you're an all-around strong student with good academic performance and involvement in activities outside of academics. In that case, you could certainly be considered for these scholarships, even if you don't have any extreme or exceptional achievements to your name.

Some of NYU’s scholarships are also offered through specific schools or departments within the university, targeting students in those areas of study. Remember, all students who apply to NYU are automatically considered for merit and need-based scholarships. There are no additional applications for these scholarships unless specifically noted.

Be sure to apply by the priority deadline to be considered for the maximum amount of aid. The deadlines for submitting your FAFSA and CSS Profile are also critical and must not be missed.

Bear in mind, though, that NYU, like many universities, cannot guarantee to meet 100% of demonstrated need for all admitted students. Therefore, it's also worth exploring outside scholarships and work-study opportunities to help finance your education there.
