What are the chances of getting a full ride scholarship as an athlete?

I've been playing soccer for my high school team for a few years and I'm really hoping to continue playing in college. I've heard that athletes can sometimes get full ride scholarships, but I'm not sure how competitive it is. Does anyone know how these scholarships work and what's usually required to get one? I'm also curious if there are specific sports where full ride scholarships are more common. Any tips on how I can increase my chances would be greatly appreciated!

Full scholarships, also known as "full rides," are indeed available for athletes at NCAA Division I and II schools. However, these scholarships are fairly competitive, particularly for popular sports such as soccer. A full ride covers tuition and fees, room and board, and textbooks.

These full rides are generally awarded for "head count" sports, meaning there's a limit on the number of players who can receive a scholarship. For men, these sports are Basketball and Football (Division I FBS schools only). For women, they are Basketball, Volleyball, Tennis, and Gymnastics. The important thing to note here is that soccer is a considered an "equivalency" sport. This means that, unlike head count sports, scholarships can be divided among more athletes. Thus, it is more common for soccer athletes to receive partial scholarships rather than full rides.

Coaches typically have a pool of funds that they can divide up among their team as they see fit based on the player's abilities, the team's needs, and the coach's strategies. Therefore, you'll likely be competing not just with recruits from outside the school, but potentially with your own future teammates for a piece of the scholarship pie.

In terms of boosting your chances, consider showcasing your skills and dedication in multiple ways:

- Play at the highest level possible during high school such as varsity or club level. Schools often scout these leagues for talent.

- Highlight any leadership roles you've held on your teams, such as team captain.

- Attend sports camps, which can provide valuable exposure to college recruiters.

- Maintain good academic standing as having a strong GPA and SAT/ACT scores can open up more scholarship opportunities.

Remember, a coach's offer is not the final say. You can negotiate the amount; don't be afraid to advocate for yourself. Lastly, make sure you understand the terms and conditions of your scholarship. Being aware of the rules and regulations can help maintain your eligibility throughout college. Good luck!
