Top undergraduate creative writing programs?

I'm passionate about writing and I'm hoping to study creative writing in college. I've heard there are some standout undergraduate creative writing programs across the country, but I'm not sure which ones are the best. Can anyone recommend schools that are known for their strong creative writing departments and opportunities like workshops or publications? It would be awesome to hear from anyone who has experience with these programs!

Sure, happy to guide! There are quite a few institutions well-known for their strong undergraduate creative writing programs.

First, the University of Iowa's Writers Workshop is considered one of the most prestigious in the world with a list of respected authors among its alumni. Its creative writing program fosters extensive peer review and faculty feedback in workshops to help develop your writing skills.

Another great option is Columbia University in New York City. Besides world-class faculty, Columbia offers the opportunity for students to live, study, and work in one of the world's great literary cities. The city itself is constantly bustling with numerous readings and performances, providing ample opportunities for inspiration and engagement.

Johns Hopkins University is also known for its program, as is Washington University in St. Louis. Both institutions offer smaller class sizes, allowing for intensive workshopping and personalized attention from professors.

Meanwhile, Oberlin College's creative writing program is unique because it requires you to study two genres: poetry and prose. This dual-genre program ensures that you'll be proficient in both by the time you graduate.

Last but not least, Emory University in Atlanta offers a unique joint Theater Studies and Creative Writing BFA program. If you're interested in writing for the stage or screen, this might be a great choice.

Beyond the curriculum itself, check the specifics of each program. Would you prefer a small workshop where you can get a lot of individual attention, or a larger, more lecture-based class? Are there opportunities like internships, literary magazines, or reading series that you could participate in? Does the faculty list include anyone whose work you admire? These elements can greatly affect your education. Good luck with your journey in creative writing!
