Tips for Finding Colleges with Track and Field Scholarships?

I'm a junior and have been doing track and field since middle school. I've been told I have a good shot at competing in college, but I was hoping to get some financial aid through a scholarship. Does anyone have experience or tips on how to find colleges that offer track and field scholarships? How do I approach coaches, and what should I focus on in my applications to increase my chances?

Kudos on your commitment to track and field! It's great you're considering using your athletic talent to potentially secure a scholarship for college.

Firstly, consider creating a list of schools that compete at a level where you’re likely to flourish and that offer your desired major. Both NCAA Division 1 and Division 2 schools offer athletic scholarships, whereas Division 3 schools offer academic and need-based aid. You can use the NCAA's or NAIA's (another collegiate athletic organization) websites to find a list of schools with track and field programs.

Once you have this list, start researching each college’s track and field program. Look at their past results, current roster, and recent recruiting class. This can give you insight into their program and if you'd be a good fit. You'll also want to note what events their top athletes compete in and compare their times and distances to yours.

As for reaching coaches, it’s a great idea to directly reach out. You can email the coach your athletic profile which should include personal bests, as well as a short message explaining your interest in their program. A highlight video demonstrating your athletic prowess could also be a great addition. Ensure to keep emails professional, and concise, and highlight your abilities and commitment to school and sports.

When it comes to increasing your chances, besides having impressive athletic achievements, good grades and test scores can help your prospects. Coaches prefer students who can handle the dual responsibilities of being a student-athlete. Your statement should convey your passion for your sport, and dedication to personal growth and team success.

Lastly, don't overlook the power of attending track and field camps, if possible, and participating in national or regional meets to get noticed.

Remember that the scholarship-seeking process can take time and involves both research and outreach. Stay positive and persistent, and don't lose sight of your academic and career goals in pursuit of athletic success. Good luck!
