What's new with the SAT format in 2024?

I've heard that the SAT went through some changes in 2024, and I'm a bit worried about how that'll affect my test prep. I'm planning to take the SAT later this year, and I want to ensure I'm studying the right stuff. If they've updated the sections or changed the types of questions, how do I get that information?

Also, are there any good resources or ways to prepare for these changes? Any advice from fellow juniors or seniors who might have taken it recently with any changes?

You are absolutely correct, there have been some changes in the SAT format starting from spring 2024. The SAT has transitioned to a fully digital format. This is a significant change from the old pencil and paper-based test but the style of the questions and the content covered have remained largely the same.

The new structure of the test is as follows: The Reading and Writing sections consist of two 32-minute modules, each expected to be completed in this time frame. Together, they contain a total of 54 questions. This gives you an average of about 71 seconds per question. The Math section also consists of two 35-minute modules with a total of 44 questions. You now get around 96 seconds per math question.

So, the total duration of the digital SAT is now 134 minutes to complete 98 questions. This means that while there are fewer questions, students now get somewhat more time per question than in the past, which hopefully should help to reduce some test-taking stress.

Since the test has gone fully digital, there is no longer a no-calculator section on the SAT. You can now use your calculator for all math problems.

As for preparing for this new test format, focus on adapting to the digital format. Since the official CollegeBoard website offers an online version of the test as well as related resources, try to utilize those. Also, try finding online practice exams that mimic the new format closely, so you can get accustomed to the digital interface.

There's also the Bluebook™ app which allows you to preview the digital SAT and take a full-length practice test. This can be a helpful resource to get a feel for the real exam.

Remember, despite these changes, the key content being tested in math, reading, and writing remains the same. Your study material for the SAT should still apply, the biggest change is in the way the test is being administered.

I hope this helps, good luck with your preparations!
