Which top environmental science universities should a high school junior look into?

Hey, I'm a junior in high school with a huge interest in environmental science and I'm trying to narrow down my college list. I've heard there are some top-tier programs out there, but I'm having trouble figuring out which universities are really great in this field.

What schools have strong reputations for their environmental science programs? I'm interested in not just academics but also in opportunities for hands-on research and internships. Insight from anyone who's been through the process or is currently in an environmental science program would be awesome!

If you're interested in environmental science, there are indeed several top-tier universities that can provide a high-quality education with plenty of opportunities for internships and research.

Stanford University has one of the leading environmental science programs in the world. Known for their rigorous academics, Stanford also offers students access to internships and research projects, and the interdisciplinary approach of their School of Earth, Energy, and Environmental Sciences that will expose you to different aspects of the field.

Another excellent choice would be the University of California, Berkeley. It's known for having a superior College of Natural Resources. Here, you'll see comprehensive programming in the disciplines of forestry, biology, and earth systems sciences.

On the east coast, Duke University's Nicholas School of the Environment is renowned for its innovative research opportunities and solid academics. Duke connects students with a wide network of partnerships for internships and offers study abroad programs focused on environmental science.

Also, consider the University of Michigan (UMich). They're known for the School of Environment and Sustainability (SEAS), which offers hands-on projects and allows you to collaborate with faculty on research.

Lastly, Colorado State University has an excellent program if you're interested in a blend of academics, research, and a more hands-on fieldwork approach. Their Warner College of Natural Resources is highly respected.

Remember that while the "prestige" of a program can be important, you should ensure the school fits your individual needs and preferences. This could include the style of instruction, location, cost, or even just the overall vibe you get from the campus. Consider your own academic strengths and which environment you personally would thrive in.

Don't hesitate to reach out to admissions departments or current students to get a real feel of what you could expect in any given program. It can provide you with valuable insights that go beyond what's written on a school's website.
