What is the Digital SAT 2024 and how does it differ from the old SAT?

I recently heard that the SAT format is going digital starting in 2024. As I'm planning to take the SAT soon, I'm curious about how this Digital SAT might be different from the traditional paper-based one.

Are there any specific changes I should be aware of, like in the structure or the way questions are presented? How are people preparing for this new format? Any insights into the pros and cons would be really helpful!

The digital SAT is indeed a new format for the exam that was introduced in 2024. The main switch, as you mentioned, is from the paper-based test to a digital format. Although the mode of delivery has changed, the nature and type of questions remain similar to the old SAT.

The structure of the digital SAT is set out as follows:

1) Reading and Writing: It offers two 32-minute modules, each with questions you need to answer within the given time. Overall, the section contains 54 questions, and you have about 71 seconds per question, which is a decent amount of time to think and respond.

2) Math: Similarly, you get two 35-minute modules, within which you have to solve 44 questions. With approximately 96 seconds per question, you have a little over a minute and a half per question.

This makes the total duration of the digital SAT 134 minutes, during which you'll have to complete 98 questions.

Some other differences you will notice are that there is no longer a no-calculator section on the SAT. You are allowed to utilize your calculator for both math modules. However, while you're preparing, you should still practice mental math skills for quicker problem-solving during the real test.

As for preparation, it's not drastically different from preparing for the traditional SAT. Maintaining a regular study schedule, understanding key concepts, and practicing problems are all still essential. However, it will be highly beneficial to familiarize yourself with the online interface before the actual test. The Bluebook™ app provides a full-length practice test that mirrors the structure of the digital SAT, which you can undertake to understand the type and format of the questions better.

The apparent downside of the digital SAT might be that students who are not familiar with or comfortable using digital devices for long durations might find it challenging initially. On the other hand, the pros include a streamlined process, easier navigation between questions, a systematic marking scheme, and potentially faster delivery of test results.

So, definitely prepare for the new digital format, but remember that most of what made the SAT challenging and rewarding hasn't changed: it's still about understanding and applying key concepts. Enjoy the journey and all the best for your preparations!
