How can I apply for cancer-related scholarships?

I'm currently a high school junior and looking into scholarships I can apply for next year. I've heard there are scholarships specifically for students who've been affected by cancer, either personally or through a family member. Does anyone have experience applying for these types of scholarships or know where I could find a list of them? Any tips on what scholarship committees might be looking for in an application would be really helpful. Thanks in advance!

You're indeed correct that there are several scholarships specifically designed to support students who have been impacted by cancer. These scholarships often consider the student's personal experiences and resiliency in the face of hardship.

One of the most famous cancer-related scholarships are the Cancer for College Scholarships. This program offers various awards to cancer survivors who are currently enrolled or planning to enroll in a college within the United States. The application typically opens in November, with a deadline in January. Applicants are required to write an essay detailing their experience with cancer and how it has affected their life and education.

There's also the Ulman Foundation Scholarship that awards funding for young adults affected by cancer, either directly or through the impact of a diagnosis on a close family member. The application cycle typically runs from November until March. This scholarship asks candidates to share their story and demonstrate how they have been impacted and grew from their experience.

The Pink Rose Scholarship, offered by the Sisters Network, is a scholarship aiming to provide support to students pursuing a medical or health-related career who have lost a parent to breast cancer or who have a parent who is a breast cancer survivor.

When applying, keep in mind that scholarship committees often want to see evidence of your resilience, your ability to overcome adversity, and your commitment to your education despite the difficulties you've faced. They might also be interested in your future plans and how your experiences with cancer have influenced or inspired these plans.

Remember to start your scholarship applications well ahead of the deadline and proofread everything multiple times before you submit. Ask a trusted teacher, counselor, or mentor to review your essays and application for clarity, grammar, and impact. Best of luck with your scholarship search and future academic journey!
