How do DACA students apply for financial aid without FAFSA?

I'm a junior trying to figure out my options for college financial aid, but I'm a DACA student and I know I can't fill out the FAFSA. I've heard there are still ways to get financial aid and scholarships, but I'm not sure where to start. Does anyone have advice on what specific steps I should take or what alternative forms I might need to fill out? Also, if there are any specific scholarships that are good for DACA students, I would really appreciate any recommendations!

First and foremost, it's commendable that you're not letting your DACA status discourage you from pursuing a college education. It's correct that as a DACA student, you're ineligible to fill out the FAFSA, or Free Application for Federal Student Aid. However, there are indeed alternative avenues to seek financial aid.

One of the important forms that you can fill out is the California Dream Act Application (CADAA) if you live in California. This application like the FAFSA, is used to determine eligibility for state financial aid for California public universities.

For states outside of California, you would need to check whether they have a similar state-based aid form. In fact, as a DACA student, state-specific financial aid will be your primary source of funding. Several states, such as Texas, Minnesota, New Mexico and Washington, provide state aid to DACA students.

In terms of private scholarships, there are many organizations that offer scholarships without a citizenship requirement. Here are a few to consider: TheDream.US (largest national scholarship fund for DREAMers), Golden Door Scholars, and Jack Kent Cooke Foundation scholarships.

Furthermore, it’s important to conduct an open and honest discussion with your university’s financial aid office. They can often guide you through alternatives and may have access to additional resources or scholarships from the university.

Lastly, remember to use resources like Appily to explore several scholarship opportunities tailored to meet unique circumstances. However, be sure to verify the details directly from the scholarship provider's website.

Remember, each university has its own grant aid and scholarship programs, so look at what each school might offer you separately from state and federal aid. Stay proactive and persistent when it comes to seeking financial aid supports and resources.
