What's the best way for parents to access and sign the FAFSA form?

My parents are having some trouble with the FAFSA parent sign-in process, and I'm trying to help them out. What steps should we take to make sure they can access it properly? Are there common mistakes or issues people run into that we should be aware of? Also, if anyone knows what to do when the parent signature option isn't working, I'd love to hear it. Trying to get everything sorted out so we don't run into any delays. Thanks in advance for any advice!

Before starting the FAFSA process, it's important that you and your parents gather all the necessary information, including your social security numbers, federal income tax returns, W-2s, and records of any untaxed income. You also need to know the balance of your parents' cash accounts, savings, and checking, and investments, if any.

To answer your question, here are the steps for parents to sign the FAFSA:

1. First, both of you (student and parents) need to get FSA IDs. An FSA ID is a username and password that is used for federal student aid. You can create FSA IDs at the Federal Student Aid website. Remember that parents and students must have separate FSA IDs.

2. After the FSA IDs are created, you (the student) can access the FAFSA form on the Federal Student Aid website. You'll log in with your FSA ID, and then fill out the FAFSA.

3. After the FAFSA is filled out, the parent who's information is on the FAFSA must log in with their own FSA ID to sign the FAFSA. Click on "Provide Parent's Signature" on the "Sign & Submit" page, then your parent will sign in with their ID. They will be prompted to agree to the terms and conditions, and their FSA ID will serve as their signature.

As for common mistakes or issues people run into, make sure the social security numbers and dates of birth for both you and your parents are correct—these are commonly mistyped and can cause issues. Another common problem is not saving the changes at the end of each section; it's crucial to save at each step.

If the parent signature option isn’t working, it could be due to a few reasons. Your parent’s FSA ID might not be linked to their social security number, or there could be a mismatch in the information they provided when creating the FSA ID and their actual social security information. If you continue to have issues, you can contact the Federal Student Aid Information Center for additional assistance.

Remember that the FAFSA is open from October 1 to June 30, and applying as early as possible increases your chances of receiving the most aid, as some funds are awarded on a first-come, first-served basis. Good luck with your process!
